A safe and inclusive learning environment is crucial for student learning and in order for that to be achieved, instruction and management must go hand-in-hand. In order to achieve this, I want my classroom to provide students with choice and give them the opportunity to make their own connections. Good management starts with student engagement. A classroom cannot be well managed unless students understand what is expected of them, and are engaged the entire class. Making my expectations clear from the very beginning is going to be one of my top priorities as a teacher. Without clear expectations, students fall by the wayside and classroom management becomes nearly impossible. Providing boundaries for my students is also a way to ensure good classroom management, as well as a safe and inclusive classroom environment. Combining boundaries, expectations, and choice will ensure my students all achieve success in my classroom.
Management Strategy
When it comes to problematic behavior, I believe in a redirect system that gives students the chance to change their behavior before being given consequences. The first step of this system is a subtle warning to the student. This warning will not take place in front of the entire class, as its purpose is not to call out the student. Instead, I will quietly walk next to the student, give them a small warning, and then give them some time to correct their behavior. This is important because students need to be allowed to correct their mistakes instead of being immediately punished for them.
The second step of the redirect system is separating the student from the situation. This step doesn’t involve removing the student from the classroom. Instead, the student is moved to a different seat. This will hopefully put them in a situation where they consider their behavior and how it affects others, and then change it. The second step is just as subtle as the first as well. Students are simply quietly moved away from the situation.
The third and final step involves the student being taken out to the hallway in order to have a private conversation with the teacher. This may not result in consequences. Instead, it’s simply a chance for the teacher to understand what the problem is and for the student and teacher to work together to find a solution for the problem. If I have a student that reaches this step of the system, I will also explain to them exactly what the issue was and why they were taken away from the classroom. This will allow the student to understand why they have been redirected and avoid that behavior in the future.
The studio space is full of materials, tools, and procedures that may be dangerous for students. This is why it’s important for me, as a teacher, to redirect students who are not behaving appropriately and set the standards for appropriate behavior immediately. It will be very important for me to communicate my expectations, as well as the redirect system. Students need to gain an understanding of the classroom for there to be a safe and inclusive classroom environment. Setting up my classroom in this way, with clear expectations and guidelines, will ensure that students feel safe and included in my classroom.
