Setting and Context
Metals 1 Key Project
My metals 1 class is very new to metalsmithing, and therefore needed a few projects to teach them the very basics of working with metal. This project was called the Key Project and it's purpose was to teach students how to use the polishing machine correctly and safely.
For this project, students designed a key that unlocks something they love or care about. Every student had a different idea for their piece, and were incredibly engaged throughout the process. Students were asked to file, sand, and polish their piece to a professional level. This project was great practice and incredibly fun for students involved! |

Social Justice Lesson
My drawing 1 class was just entering their portrait unit as I created this lesson. Because of that, this lesson is centered around female portrait artists, feminism, and social justice issues as a whole. My students all created a pin made out of shrink-a-dink that featured a design and/or phrase about a social justice issue that affects their everyday lives.
This project was incredibly personal and cathartic for a lot of my students. It was beneficial for them to see how artists handle these issues, and then getting the tools they need to also handle these issues in their art. |
