For this standard, I chose my two co-curricular reflections to demonstrate my achievement. I chose these because my reflections exemplify my ideas of how I can include certain students in my curriculum and how I can create a better community using co-curricular activities. These reflections demonstrate that I am conscious of creating an inclusive and respectable learning environment for all of my students. Although I don't specifically touch on how I will establish a safe learning environment, these reflections show that I am conscious of how diverse populations of students can really be.
I believe I am developing in this standard. This is because I haven't put as much thought into establishing that environment as I need to. I am fully aware that students come from all walks of life. This means that students require a safe environment where they can focus on learning, despite their differences. I believe my reflections show that I am developing this area and in addition to that, my management plan is also a great example of how I am developing in this standard. My management plan is extremely thorough and I try to touch on the diversity of students as much as possible within it. I have considered how to establish a safe, inclusive environment and that can be seen within my management plan.
Another example of growth within this standard can be seen between lesson plan 1 and lesson plan 2. It is clear that I considered things more prominently in lesson plan 2 that I had not considered in as much depth within the first lesson plan, including differentiation. Although lesson plan 1 is a great example of my pedagogical expertise, lesson plan 2 shows the growth I have gone through throughout the semester. While writing any assignment for this class, I was fully aware of how important it is to give students a safe environment. Although some artifacts do not reflect my considerations, I believe a select few make it clear that I have been considering, to a degree, how to establish a safe environment this entire semester.
One thing I can do to improve on this standard is plan my lessons around diversity. Instead of considering diversity and an inclusive environment after writing my lesson plans, I should build lesson plans around those ideas. This way, I will gain more understanding for this standard and ensure that every student in my class is included. Another thing I could do that I wasn't able to do this semester is establish clear and concise rules that let students know exactly what is expected of them all year long. Setting up these rules seems to be one of the most efficient ways to ensure that the classroom environment is safe, inclusive, and respectable. If I do these things and continue to seek out knowledge in this area, I am sure I will become advanced within this standard.
