For this standard, I chose my management plan and my setting and context. I believe my management plan is a good example of how I demonstrate leadership and how I demonstrate high ethical standards. This is because I made the plan thinking about student needs and envisioning myself as the leader of my classroom. I believe my thoroughness in my management plan makes it clear how I consider myself a leader in my classroom and what that looks like. My setting and context artifact is also a good indication of my knowledge of the school system and how leadership can enhance Thompson Valley. This artifact exemplifies my thoughts about the educational practices within Thompson Valley, as well as the support systems in place. These are important to consider when it comes to leadership because without knowledge of these things, it's impossible to assume a leadership role.
I believe I am developing in this standard. This is because I haven't gotten many opportunities in my education to assume leadership roles. Despite this, I believe I have excelled in the leadership roles I had the opportunity to take. One reason I excel at leadership roles is because I am able to advocate for students and I always have the student's best interests in mind. These are two elements an educator must have in order to truly lead. I only consider myself still developing in this standard because I have not gained as much experience as I need to be truly proficient. I believe student teaching is going to push me into proficiency because I will have far more opportunities to lead a classroom alone.
Although I haven't had many opportunities for leadership roles, I still believe I have demonstrated leadership in small ways throughout the semester. For example, while my group and I were creating our assessment project, I definitely led the group when it came to assigning tasks. There has been little instances throughout the semester where I have been able to assume a leadership position. Even if it is small instances, it was still good practice for me to assume those roles and get comfortable in a leadership position. This semester, I was also able to see many examples of other people taking on leadership roles. For example, my mentor teachers demonstrated leadership constantly which taught me a lot about what a leader looks like and what is required of a leader.
One thing I can do to improve in this standard is actively seek out leadership roles. Even if I wasn't given opportunities, it's important for me to constantly look for those opportunities to demonstrate my leadership. Another way I could improve is to continue to observe successful teachers demonstrate leadership. This will continue to broaden my knowledge of how I can demonstrate leadership in my own practices. Seeking out opportunities and observing successful teachers are two ways I can move towards proficiency and advancement in this standard.
